Mraz, J. (2002) Sebastião Salgado: Ways of Seeing Latin America. Vol. 16. In: Third Text. Directed by Mraz, J. (s.l.). pp.15–30.
This entire article, although specifically about Sebastião Salgado, acts as a caution that a photographic set without supporting text will supply an overarching narrative of its own. Salgado may well have meant the reading that Mraz derives when he produced ‘Other Americas’ (although Mraz sees the influence of Robert Frank as more important here) but the article does remind us that sequencing and image selection is fundamental to allow a true reading of the artist’s intentions. If one is not careful – and does not provide supporting context – the overall effect may not be what was intended.
